Connor Hutchinson (b. 1997) is a Sydney/Illawarra based Australian composer, performer and music educator, currently in his final year of studying a Bachelor of Music (Composition) (Honours) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with High Distinction average. His compositions encompass a variety of styles and instrumentations, with various works for solo instruments, small and large ensembles having been performed and recorded around the world. Connor is also an experienced conductor having led a number of brass and concert bands. He has studied with some of Australia’s finest composers and conductors, including Michael Smetanin, Carl Vine, Paul Stanhope, Damien Ricketson, Gerard Brophy, Tristan Coelho, Ursula Caporali, Ivan Zavada, Daniel Blinkhorn, John Terry, Ronald Smart and John Lynch.
Connor is currently the director of the Primary Band Program at Cedars Christian College in Wollongong, where he is also a casual lecturer in Composition and Music Theory, and provides private tuition in Piano, Brass/Woodwind, Vocal, Conducting and Composition/Music Theory. He served as a Program Staff Member at the 2018 Star Lake Musicamp in New York, USA, where he was involved as a brass instructor, composition tutor and piano accompanist. Connor performs regularly at a number of private functions and events, and is a regular pianist at the award-winning restaurant Table 426 in Corrimal. He is a member of several orchestras and ensembles, including the prestigious Sydney Conservatorium of Music Wind Symphony Orchestra playing Euphonium, and the Australian Territorial Youth Brass Band (ATYB) of the Salvation Army playing 1st Baritone. In 2017, he toured the U.K. with the ATYB and acclaimed singer Silvie Paladino including a performance at Birmingham Symphony Hall, and in 2019 toured the U.S. state of California with the ATYB and participated in the prestigious Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade. The renowned Modern Music Ensemble of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music under Daryl Pratt will be premiering Connor’s latest work, ‘COMPLEXIONS – Four Preludes for Chamber Orchestra’, at their upcoming program in September. Earlier in 2019, the Melbourne Staff Band (MSB) recorded Connor’s new work for Brass Band, the ‘Meditation – Be Still’, on their latest album Rise. Be Still has not only been played by the MSB in their various tours around Australia, but also by a number of other brass bands in Australia and the U.S.A, including the Australian Territorial Youth Brass Band who premiered the work on their tour of California. Other recent highlights for Connor include being awarded the 2018 Horace Keats Memorial Prize for Composition and the Dean’s List of Academic Performance for 2017. |
